Well... I needed an outlet for my diabetes but I was not sure how or where to start... So here it goes... Most that know me know I have diabetes... I was diagnosed in 1983 on my 10th birthday... Yup I spent my 10th birthday in the hospital learning how to do insulin injections on an orange.. I was scared as hell and felt like a freak... My family has a history of diabetes but I am the first with type 1 or juvenile diabetes... That first summer was awful. I felt that my friends and their families were afraid to have me over because they did not know how to or what diabetes was. I learned quickly and along the way had some battles that ended in hospital stays.
Once I started middle school I met someone else that had the diabetes and we became great friends. It still was tough but I felt finally I had a friend that I could hang out with and not have to worry about what their family thought of me.
High School started and I lost touch with my diabetic friend. We used to call ourselves "shot sisters".. but life went on and I slowly would tell others about having diabetes. No one really understood and they had no clue I had to do multiple injections on a daily basis...
Here is just the beginning of my journey... I will continue more later.... :)
